Measuring pollutants in soil

I'm in the beginning stages of conducting research on the benefits of using edible vegetation in rain gardens. I'd like to measure the levels of pollution in the runoff coming off the roads and into the gardens. Do any of you know of good equipment for measuring such pollutants, specifically hydrocarbons and heavy metals? I will be using a CHEMetrics V-2000 photometer to measure nutrient levels.

Hi John, thanks for the response! I will be purchasing the devices with limited grant money, so the cheaper the better. I also plan to be conducting the actual analyses in a lab, so portability is not a major issue--though of course, I'd like not to clog up too much space in my lab. I am definitely interested in quantifying concentrations of specific pollutants. Because of where I will be sampling, I anticipate at least minimal levels of these pollutants in all of my samples.

Are you interested in hand-held devices such as the one you specifiy or are you interested in field test kits that don't have an initial $1K and up price associated with them? How comprehensive of a test? Are you concerned with concentrations or just the mere presence of the pollutant.
