Laptops and other electronic tools at lectures - are they helping or distracting?
Educational ideas are changing so often that it is hard to keep track. Not long ago the use of laptops by students was to be the greatest thing and now it seems that US universities are leading the way in banning them from lectures as they are distracting students from the actual participation in classes. Any experiences or opinions on this?

Laptops and electronic tools are powerful resources in education. Depends on the maturity of the student able to use it. |

I am a student at the University of Virginia. Roughly half of my fellow students (including myself) use computers during class. I'll admit that at time they can be distracting--people playing games, checking email, using online chat, etc. At the same time, however, they allow us to take notes much more quickly and to record a larger percentage of the information the professor is conveying. I am able to record my notes in a legible way and to organize them using bullets and various paragraph levels. |
