Good Plastics, Bad Plastics - How tubes, plates and pipette tips can affect your experiments

      Dr. Rafal Grzeskowiak is a Field Application Specialist responsible for the consumables product portfolio at Eppendorf AG Headquarter in Hamburg (Germany). He joined the company in 2003 and worked at various positions in sales, customer support and marketing with product responsibility for automation, centrifugation and consumables. Rafal obtained his M.Sc. in molecular biology at the University of Warsaw (Poland) working on metabolic gene expression through RNA aptamers in Aspergillus and as a research assistant at King's College London was involved in projects on cloning and phylogenetic analysis of rRNA genes in pathogenic fungi. Rafal received his Ph.D. at the Georg August Universität Göttingen, where he investigated regulation of gene expression and cellular signaling pathways involved in Diabetes Type II. Later he took a position of a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular genetics (Berlin, Germany) and led projects on functional genomics of human dilated cardiomyopathy.

    Substances leaching out of plastic consumables – so-called “leachables” – are still frequently underestimated in laboratory workflows. While possible effects of leachables are routinely taken into account in pharmaceutical or food research, this topic is still underrepresented in the majority of life science applications. Recent scientific evidence shows however that leachables can significantly affect experiments and pose a likely source of error in many assay systems for example, by inhibiting enzyme activities in bioassays or falsifying nucleic acid quantification.  This educational webinar presented by Eppendorf and hosted by LabRoots will provide a comprehensive overview of what are leachables and their role in laboratory workflows as well as give recommendations on how to

    •    qualify consumables
    •    increase reliability and reproducibility of experiments
