Brown fat, or brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a specific type of body fat that is activated under cold conditions. A biological process known as non-shivering thermogenesis takes place in the BAT to regulate body temperature. The BAT burns calories to produce heat and maintain body temperature when exposed to cold temperature.
