Turn Off the Light!

WRITTEN BY: Jennifer Ellis

Light pollution is an excess of artificial light produced by civilization that can compete with starlight in the night sky, interferes with astronomical observations, can disrupt ecosystems and also can cause adverse health effects, such as cancer, depression, and sleep disorders.

Light pollution sources include lighting in and outside of buildings, advertising signage, offices, factories, streetlights, and illuminated sporting venues. It is most severe in densely populated areas of North America, Europe, and Japan and in major cities in the Middle East and North, but even relatively small amounts of light can be noticed and create problems.

Learn what you can do to decrease wasted light and stay healthy!
