The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, is a robotic space craft that was launched 19 years ago. A joint project between the European Space Agency and NASA, SOHO's original mission was to observe phenomena on and around the sun, but to everyone's surprise, it ended up being remarkably good at finding comets.
In fact, in the 19 years that it's been operating, SOHO has found 3000 comets. This fast-motion illustration is not on a loop. This is a representation of all of the comets SOHO has discovered so far.
