This talk, presented by The University of California, San Diego features J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., who is known as an expert in genetics who has made tremendous, lasting impacts on the field. He founded the company where scientists revealed the genomic sequence of the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae, which is the first free-living organism whose genome was fully sequenced. Venter would go on to found Celera Genomics, where the human genome was sequenced by using cutting edge methodologies created at the company.

In this talk he discusses how genetics is impacting human health, medicine and longevity. Incredibly, he has an anecdote in this talk about his own cancer, which was diagnosed using, once again, tools developed by scientists at his own company. They were able to detect prostate cancer in Venter before a routine biopsy was able to. This is a great opportunity to hear one of our greatest scientists speak about his research, which aims to shift paradigms in medicine; he wants to go from a reactionary, treatment stance to one of proactive prevention.
