Diet may Influence Sperm Quality

It may not surprise you to learn that researchers have linked a healthy diet to better sperm counts. While one should remember that these results have only linked two the things together, and have not demonstrated a cause-and-effect relationship between the two things, a diet like the one recommended in the study is familiar to many as a supposedly healthy one.

The diet in question is a Mediterranean diet, containing nutrients like some antioxidants (vitamin E, C and zinc among others), omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and folate) and a diet that is low in saturated fatty acids and trans-fatty acids. The researchers found that foods like fish, seafood, poultry, vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy and skim milk were associated with better sperm; but, diets containing a lot of processed meat, potatoes, fatty dairy products, cheese, coffee, alcohol, and sugary food and drinks have been linked to sperm of a lower quality, in some studies. It;s also been shown that a high degree of alcohol, caffeine, red meat and processed meat consumption by men decreases the chances that their partners will become pregnant.
