c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase, also known as stress-activated MAP kinases, are a family of serine/threonine protein kinases in the mitogen-activated protein kinase regime. The JNK MAPK pathway is predominantly activated by stress stimuli and plays important roles in development, apoptosis, cell growth, inflammatory, and immune responses. SAPK/JNK is activated not only by many types of cellular stresses including changes in osmolarity, UV irradiation, heat shock, cisplatinum, etoposide, thapsigargin, and tunicamycin, but also by serum, lysophosphatidic acid, and inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor.
