CRISPR 2018

LabRoots invites you to the First Annual CRISPR Virtual Event! With continued adoption and integration in research labs, CRISPR gene editing has gained importance both as a research tool in drug discovery, screening, and therapeutic development. This inaugural event will bring together thought leaders from academia, trained researcher from clinical laboratories, and industry experts from pharmaceutical to biotech.

This exciting new field is faced with new challenges and limitations. Experts will share case studies and experiences regarding best practices to guide RNA design, effects associated with CRISPR/Cas and address appropriate alternatives that are currently being developed.

POSTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Virtual poster sessions offer the opportunity to present data to a global audience via a PDF poster and video summary, and discuss results with interested colleagues through email. Posters should be submitted as a PowerPoint file. Presentations should incorporate illustrative materials such as tables, graphs, photographs, and large-print text. This content is not peer-reviewed. Submission is free.

    Leader, Genome Editing Program, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
    Biography
      Samantha leads NIST's Genome Editing Program including the NIST Genome Editing Consortium, which supports measurements, standards and assay qualification for confidence in genome editing applications with an emphasis on gene and cell therapy. She has 13 years of experience working on projects supporting better measurements and assays for early detection of cancer biomarkers in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute's Early Detection Research Network. Her research is focused on measurement assurance and technology development for genome editing, bioassay and biomarker validation, with applications in engineering biology, precision/regenerative medicine, and cancer biology. Samantha also represents the U.S. as a technical expert to the International Standards Organizations Technical Committee on Biotechnology (ISO TC 276). She is currently a U.S. liaison representing the interests and expertise of the U.S. on standards relating to nucleic acids measurements.

      Biography
        Dr Dimitri Perrin is Lecturer in Data Science at Queensland University of Technology. Prior to joining QUT, he worked as a FPR Fellow in the Laboratory for Systems Biology (RIKEN, Japan) and as an IRCSET Marie-Curie Research Fellow with the Centre for Scientific Computing & Complex Systems Modelling (Dublin City University, Ireland) and the Department of Information Networking (Osaka University, Japan). His research interests are in developing new approaches to analyse, understand and optimise biomedical and social systems. His work therefore spans the areas of modelling and simulation, computational biology and bioinformatics, and data analysis. Recent projects include gene editing (CRISPR), high-resolution biomedical imaging (CUBIC), and mobile apps for health research. Dimitri Perrin holds a Master's Degree (Diplôme d'Ingénieur) in Computer Engineering from ISIMA (Aubière, France), a M.Sc. in Computing from Université Blaise Pascal (Clermont-Ferrand, France), and received his Ph.D. in Computing from Dublin City University (Dublin, Ireland).

        Biography
          Dipali Sashital is an assistant professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics & Molecular Biology at Iowa State University. She received her PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Following postdoctoral studies with Jennifer Doudna at University of California, Berkeley and Jamie Williamson The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, Dr. Sashital joined the faculty at Iowa State in January, 2014. The Sashital lab studies the mechanisms of CRISPR-Cas adaptive immunity using a combination of genetic, biochemical, biophysical and structural tools.

          Biography
            David Schaffer is a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Bioengineering, and Neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also serves as the Director of the Berkeley Stem Cell Center. He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998. He then conducted a postdoctoral fellowship at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies before becoming a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley in 1999. At Berkeley, Dr. Schaffer applies engineering principles to enhance stem cell and gene therapy approaches for neuroregeneration, work that includes novel approaches for molecular engineering and evolution of new viral vectors as well as new technologies to investigate and control stem cell fate decisions. Dr. Schaffer has received an NSF CAREER Award, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, Whitaker Foundation Young Investigator Award, and was named a Technology Review Top 100 Innovator. He was also awarded the American Chemical Society Marvin Johnson Award in 2016, the American Chemical Society BIOT Division Young Investigator Award in 2006, the Biomedical Engineering Society Rita Shaffer Young Investigator Award in 2000, and was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering in 2010.
          • Xiaobo Zhou, PhD
            Assistant Professor of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard
            Biography
              Dr. Zhou has been leading the Functional Genomics research team at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School since 2009. Her group focuses on deciphering function of human genome, mainly genetic regions identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) or eQTL analysis in respiratory diseases. Through interpreting biological meanings of GWAS findings, her lab aims to identify novel drug targets in complex pulmonary diseases. To interpret biological meaning of genetic variants/regions associated with complex diseases, Dr. Zhou's group has established a pipeline to dissect local chromatin structure surrounding GWAS and eQTL SNPs, including ChIP, FAIRE (Formaldehyde-Assisted Isolation of Regulatory Elements), 3C (chromatin conformation capture) and 4C(chromatin conformation capture sequencing). We also recently applied a high-throughput screening to identify functional variants within GWAS loci by massively paralleled reporter assay (MPRA). The state-of-the-art genome editing method, mainly CRISPR/Cas-9 has also been routinely applied to identify functional regulatory variants in a semi-high-throughput way and to asses function of novel GWAS genes. Additionally, to pursue further mechanistic studies on GWAS candidate genes, her group characterized protein interactome in vitro and generated knockout and transgenic mouse lines in disease relevant murine models. In collaboration with multiple cross-functional groups, he group has identified functional variants in the HHIP and FAM13A two COPD GWAS loci and also identified novel druggable pathways associated with genetic predispositions in COPD. Additionally, Functional Genomics Laboratory led by her has also developed customized experimental validations on networks built upon various human -omics datasets, including genomics, proteomics and genetics data.
            • Lihua Zhu, PhD
              Professor and Director of Bioinformatics Core, University of Massachusetts Medical School
              Biography
                Lihua Julie Zhu obtained her Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999, and her M.S. in Computer Science from DePaul University in Chicago in 2001. She joined the Bioinformatics Core of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center (RHLCCC) of Northwestern University in 2001, where she was the Director of Bioinformatics Consulting Core from 2003 to 2005 and the Director of Clinical Informatics Group from 2005 to 2007. She joined the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) as the head of Bioinformatics core of Program in Gene Function and Expression (PGFE) in 2007. Dr. Zhu is currently a professor and the head of Bioinformatics Core in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Cancer Biology (MCCB) of UMMS.
