Abstract
Advances and innovations in laboratory technologies for performing protein electrophoresis and immunotyping, combined with the workforce shortage of laboratory professionals have prompted many clinical laboratories to consider the implementation of more automated methods for performing this testing. However, moving from gel-based testing to capillary platforms presents its share of analytical and operational challenges. Hear from a recent implementer of this technology and how clinical laboratories are successfully moving towards a more automated and reproducible process.

Learning Objectives
  • Recall the analytical principles employed in the separation of proteins and the identification of immunoglobulin heavy and light chains
  • List several advantages and disadvantages of gel immunofixation and capillary electrophoresis immunotyping
  • Anticipate the challenges faced when implementing new laboratory technologies
