Can CBD Help Dogs?

WRITTEN BY: Helaine Krysik

Using CBD based products to treat various ailments in dogs has been growing in popularity in recent years. Whether the cannabinoid is in dog food, treats, topical oils, or oral supplements, there’s a CBD related solution on the market for canines. But how effective are these products?

The results are mixed. Anecdotally, dog owners report positive results, although some veterinarians are holding back, indicating that there isn’t enough substantive data yet to draw any conclusions.

That said, other reports indicate that CBD can help relieve discomfort in dogs suffering from osteoarthritis, seizure disorders, and skin issues.

How does CBD help these conditions? By blocking the body’s processes that cause inflammation, as well as reducing overall anxiety.

Whether or not vets agree on the benefits of CBD, there is a consensus that the risks for dogs consuming CBD are relatively low.

However, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there can be short term side effects, such as dry mouth, low blood pressure, lethargy, dizziness, diarrhea, vomiting, inhibited liver enzymes and upset stomach.

Vets are also concerned with the lack of regulation applied to CBD-containing products on the market. This includes inaccuracies listing the exact amounts of CBD in dog foods and treats, as some products contain less CBD than indicated on the label, as well as pollutants such as lead and toxic substances in the food and supplements.

When choosing a CBD product, dog owners should always research the product’s ingredients through reliable, science backed sources, to make sure the marketing is accurate, not misleading, and that the ingredients are safe.

Ideally, dog owners should work directly with vets experienced in CBD supplements to get the best recommendations for their pets. In this regard, it is no different than best practices in selecting CBD products for humans.
