Why Some Utah Medical Cannabis Patients Use Illegal Products

WRITTEN BY: Kerry Charron

A study published in the Journal of Cannabis Research examined the reasons why some patients enrolled in Utah’s medical cannabis program choose to use illegal products. Understanding why some individuals turn to unregulated products instead of opting for legal medical cannabis products is critical for several reasons. This study highlighted why some people risk using unregulated products that potentially have additives and contaminants, while others opt for legal cannabis products.

The study included analysis of survey data collected from over 200 people enrolled in Utah’s medical cannabis program. The survey reflected a convenience sample-based prospective cohort evaluation of newly registered adult participants in Utah’s medical cannabis program. The participants had a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain, and/or cancer. The surveys assessed Utah’s program experience, physical and mental health, and barriers and to legal medical cannabis access.

The research team aimed to understand why some people turn to unregulated cannabis when they are approved to use licensed products tested for safety and quality. Illegal cannabis products often vary in quality and cannabinoid levels, and they are more likely to contain mold, heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxins compared to legal cannabis.

Data analysis showed that the cost of legal cannabis is a significant barrier for many survey respondents. Study author Dr. Jerry Cochran explained, “There's this trade-off. It's like, ‘OK, I have a chronic illness which makes it hard for me to work, and so I have limited resources. I can more easily afford the stuff from my friend on the street, but that stuff on the street might make me sicker in the long run.’ It creates this catch-22 where it becomes a health disparity.” The findings emphasize the importance of balancing product affordability and thorough quality assurance testing of cannabis products.

The research team found that access to high-quality information is a key factor influencing people who choose legal cannabis products. Medical cannabis patients who use the state website for information about cannabis are much more likely to use legal cannabis products. People who seek more accurate and objective information tend to choose products that reflect stricter safety and quality regulations.
