Everyone loves getting kisses from a dog, but how healthy is it? Could certain diseases be transferred from a dog’s mouth to a human’s mouth? How important is doggy dental care? Is a dog’s mouth cleaner than a human’s mouth? Here, we present an infographic designed to provide educational insights into a dog’s mouth and the potential health risks associated with them. While dogs and humans have coexisted with each other for thousands of years, it was only in the last few decades that their dental health became a topic of importance for dog owners and veterinarians. To put things into perspective, proper oral hygiene matters just as much for pets as it does for humans. “Dog saliva does contain naturally occurring bacteria and enzymes, but that doesn’t mean it’s cleaner or safer than a human mouth,” says Dr. Khal, general dentist at Southdale Dental Office in London, Ontario. “Both species carry bacteria, some shared, some unique and poor dental care can lead to gum disease, infection, and other health issues over time.” Regular dental cleanings, brushing (for both people and pets), and routine check-ups are key to keeping mouths healthy, whether they have two legs or four.
