Astronomers still have many questions about the universe. One of those being: what is the universe’s shape?
It may seem like a simple question at first glance, but the answer is anything but. After all, astronomers can’t observe the entire universe given that it’s so large and massive.
Most models agree that the universe is either one of three things: flat like a piece of paper, positively-curved like a sphere, or negatively curved like a saddle.
Each of these shapes introduces expansion limitations, and given what we know about how our universe is expanding, a positive curvature isn’t likely. The circumstances leave us only to consider the flat and negatively-curved options.
Still, much of this ideology is theoretical. Without the ability to see the edge of the universe, it’s a question we may never know the correct answer to. We can only hope that future advancements in technology could bring us one step closer to finding out.
