Building Muscles For The Robots Of The Future

WRITTEN BY: Abbie Arce

The robots of today are incredibly advanced. From assisting in surgeries to robots designed for disaster response, robots help us with a massive number of functions we would otherwise be unable to complete.

Although the computerized brains of these helpful machines have made significant strides forward over the past few decades, the bodies are still made from traditional materials. These materials are rigid and unable to be adapted for use in more specialized functions.

With the right improvements to robot frames, we can make them safer around humans and therefore more helpful in daily activities.

Current robot frames sometimes have a similar shape but an entirely different system for movement than the human body. Is it possible that we borrow from natures intelligent design to improve upon these machines?

In the following video mechanical engineer, Christoph Keplinger discusses his efforts to create artificial muscles to help robots with more fluidly.

These durable and adaptable artificial muscles may be the future of robotic frames.
