Trusting Your Gut

WRITTEN BY: Anthony Bouchard

Everyone has what they call "gut instincts" where their body is telling them to do one thing or another. But should you listen to that instinct?

Some might say your instincts jump to conclusions, while others say it's an evolutionary process that has helped us to survive as long as we have. On the other hand, what actually causes instincts to kick in?

According to experts, it's all based on patterns having to do with memory and quick thinking. It utilizes a part of the brain known as the Basal Ganglia, rather than the Cortex, and this means you make decisions based on a quick thought pattern with no deep thought whatsoever.

In some cases, your first impressions, which trigger quick thinking, can be right. However, on different occasions, slower thought and taking a while to mull everything over can also be a good choice.

Overall, should you trust your gut? We guess it depends on the scenario.
