Demystifying the Organ Donation Process

WRITTEN BY: Xuan Pham

The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) tabulated that 122,563 people currently are in need of a lifesaving organ transplant. They estimate that on average, 22 people die each day while waiting for a transplant didn't happen, because of a shortage in human organ donations.

The disparity doesn't end there. As it turns out, in addition to people who may be against organ donation, many people who support organ donation aren't actually register to be an organ donor. Furthermore, of the 125 million people who are registered as organ donors, only about 3 in every 1,000 are actually eligible to become donors upon death.

It's no wonder then that increasing the number of organ donors is such an enormous priority for transplantation services. Watch the video to learn about the organ donation process, and perhaps understanding myths versus facts will convince you to change your donation status.
