Do New Dads also Get the Postpartum Blues?

WRITTEN BY: Xuan Pham

Post-partum baby blues are most commonly associated with mothers of newborns. But a new study finds that new dads are not immune to the depression that sometimes follows bringing home a new baby.

Paternal depression, as it turns out, is real, although it is not as well-known as maternal depression. Risk factors for the condition include stress and poor health, which may trigger depression before the baby is born. And it may worsen once the baby comes home with the new father.

Researchers say the first step of treatment is bringing awareness to the possibility of this condition. "Our key message applies worldwide: Pregnancy and the postnatal period are key opportunities to engage with expectant and new fathers to discuss depression symptoms and provide support," said Lisa Underwood, the lead author of the study.
