A Warning Concerning Smartphones and Radiation

WRITTEN BY: Brenda Kelley Kim

It seems as if everyone has a grip on a cellphone and most of us don't like to put them down for long. Recently, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a warning to residents about electromagnetic radiation that is emitted from smartphones. In the notice, a document created in 2009 was referenced that talked about the RF (Radio Frequency) energy that cellphones produce. The report was released in response to a lawsuit from UC Berkeley professor Joel Moscowitz who wanted the department release the document which contained findings on levels of RF energy and radiation from mobile phones.

California DPH director Dr. Karen Smith said, in a statement, "Although the science is still evolving, there are concerns among some public health professionals and members of the public regarding long-term, high use exposure to the energy emitted by cell phones." Moskowitz filed the lawsuit because of research he says points to health risks of cellphone use. Moskowitz points to directions from cellphone manufacturers that advise keeping the devices far away from the body and not storing them in pockets of clothing or keeping them near the bedside at night.
