Neuroscience research is vital to finding treatments for Alzheimer's, ALS, brain cancer and so many other neurological diseases. Brain injuries are tough to heal and research into ways the brain care repair itself is needed as well. While many universities have research facilities, there is always a need for me. Brown University recently received a donation of $100 million from alumni Robert J. Carney and his wife Nancy D. Carney. Their gift will fund the Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science. Mr. Carney graduated from Brown in 1961 and has spent many years as a Brown trustee. The Carney Institute will replace the current Brown Institute for Brain Science (BIBS) and will provide additional research funds and facilities.
Research at the new institute will include work on brain-computer interfaces to aid patients with spinal injury and paralysis. Studies on innovative advances in computational neuroscience to address behavior and mood disorders as well as research into mechanisms of cell death will also be essential research targets.
