Animals With Strange Tongues

WRITTEN BY: Nouran Amin

Tongues allow us to perform many functions from swallowing food to giving a speech. However, other animals may use their tongues to perform other functions necessary for their survival. Here is a list of 7 animals that have strangely shaped tongues: 1) Chameleons, have long sticky tongue that can stretch twice their body length in order to capture prey 2) Tube-Lipped Nectar Bats, they have long tongues that extend back to their rib cage, the longest tongue known of any mammal 3) Woodpeckers, have backward sparing structured tongues 4) Pangolins, who have long tongues as well that are anchored at the back of their rib cage 5) Alligator Snapping Turtles, have worm shaped protrusions from their tongue (lingual luring) that primarily function as bait to catch prey 6) Giraffes, tongues hold a tough sandpaper surface and antibacterial surface to heal abrasions and cuts 7) Blue whales, have a stretchy tongue that allows it to contract and filter water.
