Gut Bacteria May Revolutionize Blood Donations

WRITTEN BY: Nouran Amin

Scientists from the University of British Colombia have discovered enzymes from gut bacteria that seem to safely turn any blood into O blood, this is especially important since blood groups determine your survival.

For example, if you have A blood and you receive a transfusion with B blood then the result is an immune stem attack leading to death. However, receiving O blood, regardless of your blood group, will not trigger an immune response. This is because the O blood cells do not possess any markers on their surface that trigger an immune response, unlike A and B blood types.

So, researchers set out to seek enzymes that can remove immune trigger markers from the A and B blood types to essentially convert them to O blood.
