Learning More About the Genetics of Depression

WRITTEN BY: Carmen Leitch

Volunteers in the UK are participating in the largest study on the biological causes of depression that has ever been conducted. The researchers are hoping to recruit 40,000 people for this work, which is being conducted by Kings College London.

Individuals will submit DNA; it’s easy enough to get a DNA sample these days - a saliva swab contains everything the scientists need. Check out the video to see where those thousands of samples will be kept. Participants will also answer questions about their health and well-being.

Researchers are hopeful that this study could revolutionize our understanding of depression and how it is treated. The initial results from this effort will probably come out in a couple of years.
