The Future of Organ Transplantation

WRITTEN BY: Nouran Amin

The ability to transfer one organ from human to another has saved countless lives. However, this procedure comes with so much challenges and risks such as graft-vs-host rejection. Today, doctors try their best to work on advancing treatments for patients but often times an organ transplant is needed for survival. Current improvements of organ transplants aimed at making the process less stressful include tissue engineering and induced pluripotent stems cells (iPSCs)—this particular area of research is geared at making new organs from a patient’s own cells. Other areas of improvements include the hopes of 3D printing organs and xenotransplantation (organ transplant from different species). Watch the video above to learn more!
