Is the Gallbladder an Expendable Organ?

WRITTEN BY: Carmen Leitch

When considering human organs, the brain and heart are essential organs, obviously, as are many others. But what about some of the organs that don’t spring to mind right away?

Gizmodo asked some experts about the expendable body parts we have. While there are some bones and maybe some muscles that seem extraneous, do we really have organs we can live without? The gallbladder would be one candidate, according to Elizabeth Brainerd, a Professor of Biology and Medical Science at Brown University. The gallbladder stores extra bile, but bile is made is the liver, which doesn’t need the gallbladder to move it to the intestine. Gallbladder removal surgeries are not unusual, and most people are fine without it.
