The search for gravitational waves has always been elusive, expensive and disappointing. But the science must go on. The LIGO, or Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory founded by astronomers from CalTech and MIT began searching in 2002 and ended in 2010, not having detected anything.
The original equipment was dismantled and now its successor, the Advanced LIGO was constructed in two locations. The first, in Livingston, Louisiana has been operating at twice the sensitivity of the original and the second, in Hanford, Washington is about to come online.
