It's that time of year. It stays light longer, we want to linger in the yard and stay out until the stars come on. Except the annoying buzzzzz of mosquitos begins and ruins another summer evening. These nasty little blood suckers are actually considered one of the most deadly animals on the planet, with approximately 1 million people dying every year from diseases carried by mosquitos. We light citrus candles, slather ourselves in lotions and potions and spray chemicals that likely shouldn't be inhaled. And still they come.
Do mosquitos even serve any purpose? Well, they do spread nectar and that helps pollination. They are a food source for several species of migratory birds, and if mosquitos were eliminated those bird populations would suffer. In addition, blood from mosquitos can be analyzed for DNA traces, telling researchers which species are where.
