Are You Gaining Weight Because You're Not Eating Breakfast?

WRITTEN BY: Kara Marker

A lot of advertisements for breakfast foods claim that eating breakfast is the healthiest thing you can do when on a diet. Is that true, though?

Dr. John Swartzberg claims he hasn't eaten breakfast since he finished medical school. He doesn't get hungry until lunchtime. He wonders, though, would he be healthier and weigh less if he did eat breakfast?

Dr. Swartzberg spent some time looking into the research that supported claims for eating breakfast to maintain a healthy weight. He found that all of the studies supporting the claim were funded by cereal companies.

Dr. Swartzberg also brought to light that the research mainly consisted of observational studies, which can't prove causality. Ultimately, Dr. Swartzberg believes there isn't strong evidence either way that eating breakfast causes weight gain.
