The Center for Human Identification (CHI) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas, with grants from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) in the Department of State, is working with governments, crime laboratories, and the public in Central America in the development and capacity building of robust and sustainable forensic systems to combat human trafficking and related crime. It is incumbent upon all of us to step up to reduce the negative impact of human trafficking that affects all our societies. CHI is dedicated to furthering forensic science with a particular emphasis on developing the full potential of forensic DNA and related databases, as well as other mechanisms, to improve the quality of life.

DNA databases are a key component in the criminal justice system in many countries and often employed in forensic investigations. A recent study revels the effects of DNA databases on the deterrence and detection of offenders in Denmark and will be used to kick off the discussion with a presentation from the authors followed by a discussion among the panelists.
