Clinical laboratories often interact their information technology (IT) department, especially when installing new instruments, adding new tests to the menu, defining critical values, analyzing ordering patterns, and developing clinical decision support (CDS) for test orders and results. Despite the need to work closely together, medical laboratory professionals may feel uncomfortable approaching IT, delaying potential improvements in laboratory workflows and patient care. We will provide information about how best the clinical laboratory can work with IT, along with examples where dialog has produced tangible, sustainable improvements across the larger healthcare setting.
