Practical considerations for fluorescence microscopy

      Trillium Blackmer is a Senior Staff Scientist in the Biosciences Division of Thermo Fisher Scientific located in Eugene, Oregon, USA. For the past 7 years, she has worked in product development for fluorescence-based probes and has also been the lead writer and developer of an educational resource for fluorescence imaging basics, the Molecular Probes™ School of Fluorescence. She received her B.S. in chemistry from University of San Francisco and her Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology & Toxicology from Northwestern University Medical School. She served in post-doctoral positions in neuroscience labs specializing in electrophysiology and fluorescence microscopy before moving over to a biotechnology start up in 2008. Her namesake is a woodland flower, not a chemical.


    In this presentation, we will go over some of the reasons you would want to consider using fluorescence imaging and give a brief introduction to using fluorescent probes for cell structure and organelle dynamics; basic cellular function including cell cycle, endocytosis and signaling; and finally, processes involved in cell stress and death such as apoptosis, autophagy, and oxidative stress. We will also go over fluorescent labeling tips and tricks from the Molecular Probes™ School of Fluorescence Basic Imaging Module. Part of getting good results is reviewing your less-than-perfect outcomes and figuring out what to try next time. You will learn about some of the problems you may encounter, see examples of what it looks like when things go wrong, and get hints for preventing those same problems in the future.
