At the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, the waste generated by over 700 species of animals has to be filtered out of the aquatic environment. The right balance of chemicals needs to be sustained to keep the huge variety of organisms, including amphibians, mammals, and invertebrates healthy.
This short video explores how aquarium staff learned about the good bacteria that help maintain the water. They called in scientists from Georgia Tech, who were able to identify various microbes living in the aquarium. Many of the microorganisms were like those that can be found in natural aquatic habitats.
