  • Lina Nilsson, PhD
    Senior Director of Data Science Product, Recursion Pharmaceuticals
    Biography
      Lina Nilsson is Senior Director of Data Science Product at Recursion, a biotech that is reimagining drug discovery using machine learning and large-scale laboratory automation. Previously, she was the COO of Enlitic, a startup that uses deep learning to improve clinical radiology. As Innovation Director at University of California, Berkeley, she helped spin out social-impact technologies. Lina has been recognized on MIT Technology Review's "TR35" annual list of the world's top innovators. Her writings on open science, social impact technologies, and gender & tech have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, and Science. Lina has a PhD in biomedical engineering from the ETH Zurich.
    • Scott Fraser, PhD
      Professor of Biology, Bioengineering, & Convergent Biosciences University of Southern California
      Biography
        Professor Scott E. Fraser has a long-standing commitment to quantitative biology, applying the tools of chemistry, engineering, and physics to problems in biology and medicine. His personal research centers on imaging and molecular analyses of intact biological systems, with an emphasis on early development, organogenesis, and medical diagnostics. After training in physics (B.S., Harvey Mudd College, 1976) and biophysics (Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University, 1979), he joined the faculty at UC Irvine, and rose through the ranks to become Chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. In 1990 he moved to Caltech to serve as the Anna L. Rosen Professor of Biology, and the Director of the Biological Imaging Center. He is deeply committed to interdisciplinary training and translational research, having helped found the Caltech Brain Imaging Center and the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, as well as serving as the Director of the Rosen Center for Biological Engineering. In Fall 2012, he moved to USC to take a Provost Professorship in the Dornsife College of Letters Arts and Sciences, the Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Keck School of Medicine and the Viterbi School of Engineering. He remains active in interdisciplinary research and serves as the Director of Science Initiatives for the USC campuses.

      • Meritxell B. Cutrona, PhD
        High Throughput Bioscience Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
        Biography
          Dr. Cutrona is a molecular and cellular biologist with expertise in membrane trafficking and image-based HCS/HCA in two- and three-dimensional cell culture systems. After graduating in Biology (1999), she obtained her MASt in genetic anthropology (2001) and her Ph.D for gene regulation studies (2006) at the University of Barcelona (Spain). During her postdoctoral research at the Negri Sud Institute (Italy), from 2007, she conducted a genetic dissection of COPII-vesicles independent protein ER export and membrane trafficking in human cell lines. In 2016, Dr. Cutrona was appointed as a postdoctoral Research Associate at CÚRAM - SFI Centre for Research in Medical Devices and University College Dublin (Ireland) where she developed a HCS/HCA high-resolution imaging platform to dissect complex phenotypes and molecular mechanisms that regulate uptake, traffic and penetrance of synthetic nanoparticles in 3D spheroids. From January 2020, Dr. Cutrona has been appointed as a Staff Scientist at HTB in St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (US), where she studies chemoresistance-triggering pathways in advanced in vitro models of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. She is implementing HCA pipelines to extract quantitative morphological information from organelles to organoids in order to establish phenotypic signatures of chemical and genetic perturbation from primary tumor organoid cultures.
        • Ashish Kulkarni, PhD

          Biography
            Ashish Kulkarni is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has courtesy appointments in the Departments of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering. Prior to this, he was an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Associate Bioengineer at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He received his B. Tech. in Chemical Technology from Institute of Chemical Technology, University of Mumbai, his PhD in Chemistry from University of Cincinnati, Ohio and his postdoctoral training from Harvard Medical School and MIT. At UMass Amherst, his lab is working on the development of nanoscale platform technologies for cancer immunotherapy applications. His work is published in high impact journals (including Advanced Materials, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, PNAS, ACS Nano, Biomaterials, Cancer Research etc.) and gathered a lot of attention and featured in several global media outlets (BBC News, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Yahoo News, Nature, Science News, Science Daily etc.). He was recently selected as one of the top 12 rising researchers by American Chemical Society's Chemical & Engineering News, a 'Young Innovator' in Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering' by Biomedical Engineering Society and a 'NextGen Star' in Caner Research by American Association for Cancer Research. He is a recipient of the Melanoma Research Alliance Young Investigator Award, Cancer Research Institute Technology Impact Award, Hearst Foundation Young Investigator Award and Harvard Cancer Center Career Development Award.
          • Jeffrey Moffitt, PhD
            Boston Children's Hospital
            Biography
              Dr. Jeffrey Moffitt received his PhD in Physics from the University of California Berkeley under the direction of Dr. Carlos Bustamante, where he developed novel optical manipulation methods to study molecular motors. He received postdoctoral training from Dr. Xiaowei Zhuang at Harvard University, where he developed methods for transcriptome-scale imaging in single cells. In particular, he was a co-inventor of the spatially resolved single-cell transcriptomics approach known as MERFISH. Dr. Moffitt is an Investigator in the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School. His laboratory is developing new spatially resolved methods for single-cell 'omics and using these tools to discover and map cells in a wide range of tissues. His laboratory is supported by a Pew Biomedical Scholar Award, the NIH, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
            • Susanne Rafelski, PhD
              Cell Science at Allen Institute
              Biography
                Susanne Rafelski is a quantitative cell biologist and the Director of Assay Development at the Allen Institute for Cell Science. The mission of the institute is to conjoin genome- editing, live cell imaging, genomics, deep learning and computation to create a human stem cell state space and elucidate the mechanisms of state transitions. Prior to joining the Institute in 2016, Susanne was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Developmental and Cell Biology, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the Center for Complex Biological Systems at UC Irvine. Susanne began imaging live cells and visualizing intracellular dynamics in 3D when she was 17 and hasn't been able to stop since. Her life-long scientific goal is to decipher the patterns and rules that transform the overwhelming complexity found inside cells into functioning units of life. She believes that to do this we must understand the organization of the structures within the cell in space and time. Susanne takes an interdisciplinary, quantitative approach to cell biology, combining live-cell image-based assays, molecular genetics, and computational methods.

                • Sandro Santagata, MD, PhD
                  Brigham and Women's Hospital
                  Biography
                    Sandro Santagata is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and practices Neuropathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital where he directs a research laboratory in the Department of Pathology. He is a member of the Ludwig Center at Harvard, the Harvard Program in Therapeutic Science and the HMS Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology. He is leading efforts to generate tumor atlases as part of the NCI Moonshot Human Tumor Atlas Network (HTAN). His work in the field of high-dimensional pathology uses multiplexed tissue imaging of cancer resection specimens to understand the biological properties of tumor cells within their native microenvironment.
                  • Melissa C. Skala, PhD

                    Biography
                      Melissa Skala received her B.S. in Physics at Washington State University in 2002, her M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004, and her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University in 2007. Her postdoctoral training was also in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, from 2007-2010. From 2010-2016, she was an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University. In 2016 she moved her lab to the Morgridge Institute for Research and Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Her lab focuses on developing biomedical optical imaging technologies, personalized cancer treatment technologies, and more effective cancer therapies.
                    • Jay Unruh, PhD

                      Biography
                        Jay Unruh received a B.S. in biochemistry from John Brown University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Kansas. He completed his postdoctoral studies in the Laboratory of Fluorescence Dynamics at the University of California, Irvine before joining the Stowers Institute as a research specialist in 2008. In 2010, Unruh took on the role of research advisor, then in 2015 Unruh was appointed co-head of the Microscopy Center. And since 2019, Unruh collaboratively directs the activities of Microscopy, Imaging and Big Data.

                      Our Mission Statement:  The Society of Biomolecular Imaging and Informatics (SBI2) is an international community of leaders, scientists, and students promoting technological advancement, discovery, and education to quantitatively interrogate biological models to provide high context information at the cellular level.


                      We are pleased to announce the 7th Annual High Content conference brought to you by The Society of Biomolecular Imaging and Informatics (SBI2) on September 16 and 17, 2020.  This is our first Virtual Conference and we hope you will join us for a meeting that prioritizes interpersonal communications, high quality scientific presentations, and educational experiences that foster overall awareness of “up to date” techniques and the rapidly expanding strategies in imaging and informatics. This virtual meeting holds the most promise to bring to you all the outstanding features our members have come to expect from SBI2.

                      POSTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

                      Virtual poster sessions offer the opportunity to present data to a global audience via a PDF poster and discuss results with interested colleagues through email. Posters should be submitted as a PowerPoint file and should incorporate illustrative materials such as tables, graphs, photographs, and large-print text. This content is not peer-reviewed. Posters can be downloaded by the viewers. Submission is free.

                      DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING YOUR ABSTRACT – AUGUST 21, 2020

                      All submitted abstracts will be reviewed and decisions regarding acceptance will be made within 3 weeks of the deadline. Further details and registration materials will be provided at that time. You do not have to be present to have a poster displayed. Only approved submissions will be displayed at this event.  There is a limit of 100 posters for the conference. All primary authors from selected posters will receive one free year of SBI2 membership.

                      POSTER AWARDS

                      10 posters/authors will be selected by the SBI2 Poster Committee for scientific achievement and poster quality.  The ten finalists will be offered to submit an oral poster presentation of their poster by video. After review by the committee, 3 Posters will be selected for the poster awards. The prizes will be awarded as: 1st Prize - $500, 2nd Prize - $300, 3rd Prize - $200. Sales and Marketing posters will not be eligible for the poster awards.
