    Biography
      Linda S. Birnbaum, Ph.D., is director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of Health, and the National Toxicology Program (NTP). A board-certified toxicologist, Birnbaum has served as a federal scientist for nearly 39 years. Prior to her appointment as NIEHS and NTP Director in 2009, she spent 19 years at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where she directed the largest division focusing on environmental health research. Birnbaum has received many awards and recognitions. In 2016, she was awarded the North Carolina Award in Science. She was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health. She was also elected to the Collegium Ramazzini and to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science, and received an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Rochester and a Distinguished Alumna Award from the University of Illinois. She also received an Honorary Doctorate from Ben-Gurion University, Israel; the Surgeon General's Medallion 2014; and 14 Scientific and Technological Achievement Awards, which reflect the recommendations of EPA's external Science Advisory Board, for specific publications. Birnbaum is an active member of the scientific community. She was vice president of the International Union of Toxicology, the umbrella organization for toxicology societies in more than 50 countries, and former president of the Society of Toxicology, the largest professional organization of toxicologists in the world. She is the author of more than 800 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and reports. Birnbaum's own research focuses on the pharmacokinetic behavior of environmental chemicals, mechanisms of action of toxicants including endocrine disruption, and linking of real-world exposures to health effects. She is also an adjunct professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Curriculum in Toxicology, and the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as in the Integrated Toxicology and Environmental Health Program at Duke University. A native of New Jersey, Birnbaum received her M.S. and Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
    • Henry C. Lee, PhD
      Associate Vice President, Director of Forensic Research and Training Center, Distinguished Professor, Institute of Forensic Science Department, University of New Haven
      Biography
        Dr. Henry C. Lee is one of the world's foremost forensic scientists. Dr. Lee's work has made him a landmark in modern-day criminal investigations. He has been a prominent player in many of the most challenging cases of the last 50 years. Dr. Lee has worked with law enforcement agencies in helping to solve more than 8000 cases. In recent years, his travels have taken him to England, Bosnia, Canada, China, Brunei, Bermuda, Germany, Singapore, Thailand, Middle East, South America and other locations around the world. Dr. Lee's testimony figured prominently in the O. J. Simpson, Jason Williams, Peterson, and Kennedy Smith Trials; and in convictions of the "Woodchipper" murderer as well as thousands of other murder cases. Dr. Lee has assisted local and state police in their investigations of other famous crimes, such as the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey in Boulder, Colorado, the 1993 suicide of White House Counsel Vincent Foster, the death of Chandra Levy, the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart, and the reinvestigation of the Kennedy assassination. He was a consultant for more than 800 law enforcement agencies. Dr. Lee is currently the director of Forensic Research and Training Center and Distinguished Professor in Forensic Science of the University of New Haven. He was the Chief Emeritus for the Connecticut State Police during 2000-2010 and was the Commissioner of Public Safety for the State of Connecticut during 1998 to 2000 and has served as the state's Chief Criminalist from 1978 to 2000. Dr. Lee was the driving force in establishing a modern state police communication system, Community based police services sex offender and DNA databank, major crime investigation concepts and advanced forensic science services in Connecticut. In 1975, Dr. Lee joined the University of New Haven, where he created the school's Forensic Sciences program. He has also taught as a professor at more than a dozen universities, law schools, and medical schools. Though challenged with the demands on his time, Dr. Lee still lectures throughout the country and world to police, Universities and civic organizations. Dr. Lee has authored hundreds of articles in professional journals and has co-authored more than 40 books, covering the areas, such as; DNA, Fingerprints, Trace Evidence, Crime Scene Investigation and Crime Scene Reconstruction. He is the author of some best sellers, such as Famous Crimes Revisited, Cracking Cases: the science of solving crimes, Blood Evidence, and Cracking More Cases. In addition, his textbooks such as Forensic Science, Physical Evidence and Henry Lee's Crime Scene Handbook have been widely adopted in medical legal and forensic professions. He has appeared in many TV shows and movies. His new television series, Trace Evidence - Dr. Henry Lee File has received high ratings and has been broadcasted around the world. Dr. Lee has been the recipient of numerous medals and awards, including the 1996 Medal of Justice from the Justice Foundation, and the 1998 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Science and Engineer Association. He has also been the recipient of the Distinguished Criminalist Award from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS); the J. Donero Award from the International Association of Identification and in 1992 was elected a distinguished Fellow of the AAFS. He has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Forensic Examiners (ACFE) in 2000, Medal of Honor by the Ellis Island Foundation in 2004, Congressional Recognition for Outstanding services by the US Congress in 2004, Presidential Medal of Honor by the President of Croatia in 2005, Medal of Service from the Ministry of Interior, Taiwan, ROC in 2006, and Gusi Peace Award from the Philippines in 2008. Dr. Lee was born in China in 1938 and raised up in Taiwan. Dr. Lee first worked for the Taipei Police Department, attaining the rank of Captain. Dr. Lee came to the United States in 1965, and he earned his B.S. in Forensic Science from John Jay College in 1972. Dr. Lee continued his studies in biochemistry at NYU where he earned his Master's Degree in 1974 and his Ph.D. in 1975. He has also received special training from the FBI Academy, ATF, RCMP, and other organizations. He is a recipient of 20 Honorary degrees: Doctorate Degrees of Science from the University of New Haven, University of Connecticut, Honorary Doctorate of Law from Roger Williams Law School, Mitchell College, American International University and Taiwan Scientific Technology University, Honorary Doctorate Degree in Humane Letters from the University of Bridgeport, St. Joseph College, Armstrong University, in recognition of his contributions to Law and Science.
      • Stephen Ferguson, PhD
        Scientist, National Toxicology Program, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
        Biography
          Stephen Ferguson is a scientist in the National Toxicology Program (NTP) at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). His primary role is to lead efforts within the NTP to develop and qualify new approach methods for predictive toxicology. This includes integration of physiologically-relevant in vitro tissue models with high dimensional assay platforms (e.g., transcriptomics, imaging, metabolomics) and their quantitative translation to phenotypic outcomes in humans.
        • David Kass, PhD
          Professor of Biology, Eastern Michigan University
          Biography
            David Kass received his PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of South Carolina combining his interests in molecular genetics and evolution, finding a relationship between concerted evolution of interspersed repetitive elements and speciation of Peromyscus. These elements were eventually determined to be part of the L1 LINE retrotransposon with the concerted evolution primarily resulting from retrotransposition of new copies from a few source genes. As a Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Kass worked on rodent and primate SINEs to gain insights into their genetic and evolutionary impacts and to date has continued SINE and LINE investigations. His research has led to discovering the first clear-cut example of an Alu gene conversion event; identified recent integrations of SINEs in rodents and humans; incorporated SINEs into human population studies; identified new mammalian SINE and LINE families with incorporation into evolutionary studies; and developed Alu-based PCR tetraplexes as a simple tool for generating complex DNA profiles. We now know, from the Human Genome Project that nearly half the human genome consists of transposable element sequences (mostly retrotransposons) and remain active, thereby continuing a role in the dynamics of the genome plus contributing to medical disorders. Therefore Dr. Kass was working with "junk DNA" before it was cool to. As a faculty member at a predominantly undergraduate institute (PUI), a primary focus has been the development of a Genome Analysis laboratory course incorporating his work into authentic research experiences for increasing the number of students experiencing actual scientific investigations.
          • Ruth Winecker, PhD, F-ABFT
            Senior Research Forensic Scientist, RTI International
            Biography
              Ruth E. Winecker, Ph.D. F-ABFT (SPHERE-AJR-CFS) The Center for Forensic Science welcomed Ruth Winecker in August of 2018 as a Senior Research Forensic Scientist to support the National Laboratory Certification Program. In April 2019, she assumed the role of Director of that project and in May accepted the role of Director for the newly formed Quality Assurance and Proficiency Program within the Center of Forensic Sciences. Ruth came to RTI International after retiring from more than 20 years of service with the State of North Carolina where she was the Chief Toxicologist for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (NC-OCME) in Raleigh, North Carolina. Under her direction since 1999, she was responsible for all aspects of the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) accredited laboratory including analytical testing, records maintenance and review of testing for >11,000 medical examiner cases per year. Dr. Winecker has published more than 80 articles, book chapters and abstracts related to forensic toxicology whose topics include analytical methodology, reviews of therapeutic and abused drugs, the toxicology of metals, and the measurement of therapeutic and abused drugs in alternative matrices. She is an active member of the American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS), the Society of Forensic Toxicology (SOFT) and The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT). In addition, she has chaired and co-chaired workshops and presented various topics in the scientific sessions at these annual conferences since 1998, and has served as the President, Vice President, Secretary and Director of SOFT and director and Vice-President of AAFS. Currently, Dr. Winecker serves as Treasurer for the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT), as an appointee of the Organization of Scientific Area Committees subcommittee on Toxicology, The Academy Standards Board and on the editorial boards of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology and the TIAFT Bulletin. She is the task leader for the Standard for a Quality Control Program in Forensic Toxicology Laboratories document. In February 2019, she accepted the Rolla N. Harger Award for outstanding contributions to the field and practice of forensic toxicology at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, a professional society dedicated to the application of science to the law.

Posters should be submitted as a PowerPoint file. Presentations should incorporate illustrative materials such as tables, graphs, photographs, and large-print text. This content is not peer-reviewed.
