Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is inflammation and damage of the liver as a direct result of fat buildup in the liver. NASH is part of a group of conditions called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Your doctor may tell you that you have a "fatty liver." A majority of people have fat buildup in the liver, and for many it causes no problems and they have no symptoms, however, in some people, the fat causes damages to cells and inflammation in the liver. This damage prevents the liver from working as well as it should. This disease is similar to the kind of disease in your liver caused by long term, excessive drinking, but NASH occurs in those who do not abuse alcohol. NASH can result in scarring of the liver which can ultimately end in cirrhosis, but that does not always happen.
