Vaccines are biological drugs that provide acquired immunity to a specific infection or disease. Many vaccines contain a component that mimics the disease-causing pathogen, such as a microorganism, which stimulates the immune system to recognize the pathogen if it should come into contact with it. Vaccine research seeks to develop new vaccines which prepare the body to recognize and destroy a pathogen when it enters the body, thus preventing the disease from taking hold.
