Venous thromboembolism (VTE) are blood clots in veins. They commonly occur in deep veins, where if they detach and flow to the lungs, can cause life-threatening pulmonary embolisms. Patients with VTEs are typically given blood-thinning medications such as low-molecular-weight heparin to resolve the blood clots.
