New AI System ID's Mosquitoes

WRITTEN BY: Nouran Amin

Identifying mosquitoes that transmit disease, such as malaria, is a critical public health effort.

To address this issue, scientists reported in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases how an artificial intelligence system can classify mosquitoes by sex, genus, species, and strain.

"These results demonstrate that image classification with deep learning can be a useful method for malaria mosquito identification, even among species with cryptic morphological variation," the researchers say. "The development of an independent and accurate method of species identification can potentially improve mosquito surveillance practices."

The AI system is known as Convoluted Neural Network and is an important step forward in medical entomology.
