How Is Sugar Extracted?

WRITTEN BY: Nouran Amin

How is sugar extracted? Well, sugar is extracted from a root vegetable, the sugar beet. However, the whole extraction process is a precise procedure that includes careful chemistry. The high-though out process ensures that sugar is the final product and nothing else from the sugar beet is present.

Although the following step is not enough to make crystals visible, sugar is first refined my stewing shredded sugar beets in hot water which turns it into a cloudy yellow substance. Then carbon dioxide gas and solution of the mineral lime is added to the yellow substance for purification purposes. After completion, the purified substance is spun and placed through more complicated machinery.
