Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the most common infectious cause of birth defects and non-genetic hearing loss in the United States, yet it remains underdiagnosed due to the absence of universal newborn screening. In this talk, Dr. Megan Pesch, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician and cCMV researcher at the University of Michigan, will provide an overview of recent advances in newborn screening for cCMV. The presentation will highlight evolving state-level policies, emerging screening technologies, and current challenges and opportunities in implementing widespread screening programs. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of early identification of cCMV and its implications for timely intervention, family counseling, and long-term developmental outcomes.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the basic pathophysiology and epidemiology of congenital CMV
- Explain why congenital CMV is under diagnosed and how newborn screening is key to early intervention
- List recent innovations in CMV testing platforms available for cCMV screening at birth
Webinars will be available for unlimited on-demand viewing after live event.
