  • Echo Commercial Product Manager, Genomics for Beckman Coulter Life Sciences
    Biography
Soheila Beck is the Echo Commercial Product Manager, Genomics for Beckman Coulter Life Sciences. Prior to this role Soheila has been a Senior Field Application Scientist, supporting the genomics and drug discovery applications for Labcyte and other liquid handling and automation companies. Additionally, Soheila has held roles at Illumina and Scripps Research Institute. Soheila has a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Michigan State University, where she did her graduate work on crystallography of macromolecules. She also has done a postdoc at University of Wisconsin- Madison, where she worked on site-directed mutagenesis studies of Tn5 Transposase residues, which are involved in Synaptic Complex formation, in Dr. Bill Reznikoff's lab.
    • Field Application Manager for Synthetic Biology - Integrated DNA Technologies
      Biography
Tom Speedy began his career as an R&D Scientist in a UK biotechnology company, following his time in Academia. After successfully developing a number of commercial diagnostic assays, including a point of care test for drugs of abuse that won the Queens Award for Innovation in the UK, he moved into a Technical Sales role with AbD Serotec/Morphosys. Having transitioned from the lab to a commercial role, Tom continued to use his combination of scientific expertise and business acumen as Head of Sales for Innova Biosciences, where he was responsible for the international sales team, supporting R&D strategy and technically complex business to business relationships. During his time at Innova he was also appointed to the Advisory Board for BioPartner UK, an independent, accredited trade organisation that promotes international partnering for trade, investment and collaborations with UK life science companies, a position which he continues to hold today. Tom's passion for Synthetic Biology led him to accept the role of Strategic Account Director with Gen9, an innovative gene synthesis company, founded by George Church, that was ultimately acquired by Ginkgo Bioworks. Tom then moved to Oxford Genetics, who specialise in cell line development, viral vectors and CRISPR. Most recently, he joined Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) as the Field Application Manager for Synthetic Biology, where he provides technical guidance and support to the sales team and to customers and is responsible for the strategy and development of the Synthetic Biology business.

In the last eight years the field of Synthetic Biology has erupted into a massive industry driving innovation in multiple disciplines, from sustainable materials to agricultural sciences. High-throughput automation is key to successful implementation of synthetic biology approaches in all disciplines. Supporting the Build segment of the Design-Build-Test cycle, the “tipless” Echo acoustic liquid handling technology from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences enables setup of DNA assembly reactions in a fraction of the time compared to tip-based liquid handlers.

The Echo 525 Liquid Handler can transfer down to 25 nL with high accuracy and precision. Automated SynBio workflows can be performed on the Echo in a fraction of standard reaction volumes, reducing reagent use and resulting in cost savings. Whether building DNA constructs with Gibson, Golden Gate or other assembly methods, contactless acoustic Echo liquid handlers create a high-throughput, fully automated system for pooling oligos, assembling DNA fragments and spotting colonies.
Key to successful, highly automated DNA assembly workflows is reliable, high-quality input material.  Beckman Coulter Life Sciences sister company Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) is a major solution provider in Synthetic Biology. For more than 30 years IDT has developed innovative solutions for genomics and molecular biology research applications. In 2012, IDT launched gBlocks™ Gene Fragments, which quickly became the preferred double-stranded DNA fragment solution for gene and pathway assembly. IDT will be announcing the addition of an exciting new product to their gene fragment portfolio that will further enable successful high-throughput assembly and cloning of long DNA constructs.
Learn how the Echo 525 Liquid Handler from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, coupled with the latest synthetic biology products from IDT, can help researchers build larger constructs, pick fewer colonies and drive projects to completion faster.

      Learning Objectives:
      • Gain knowledge of tools that enable fast and cost-effective gene assemblies
      • Explore low-volume gene assembly and QC methods
      • Learn about DNA fragment solutions for gene and pathway assembly
