The Bureau of Forensic Science (BoFS) in Garowe, Puntland State of Somalia was established in 2017 and is the first and sole operating forensic entity in Somalia. it is considered as being the national bureau and its expertise and services are readily available for all member states of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The mandate of the bureau is providing credible and reliable forensic science services to support the police and justice system in reaching fair and expedited rulings. Forensic DNA Typing has indeed played a crucial role in the bureau’s mission and mandate and revolutionized Somalia’s justice system. For the first time in the history of Somalia, a court in Garowe in May 2019 ruled a criminal case based on DNA evidence. Since that landmark case, the bureau continued solving both criminal and civil cases through scientific and courts have reached multiple verdicts using scientific evidence. In this presentation Dr. Abdirashid will explain their experience setting up the new forensic DNA typing lab and how this has become the underpinning piece in Somalia’s justice system
