What does it take to develop a novel diagnostic medical device that can increase health equity globally? This keynote panel presentation will discuss a variety of challenges and successes that have come out of designing and testing the RUMI - a photonics-based diagnostic platform. From designing a breath-based device to ensuring our product remains as affordable as possible, developing a medical device with health equity in mind requires innovators to envision the technology’s long-term use cases. We will discuss our process from ideation to innovation, and highlight the successes and challenges faced in testing novel technology with humans at the center. The discussion will conclude with where our technology is today, and what direction we plan to pursue in the near future.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the Process of Going from Ideation to Innovation: The Trial & Error in Developing a Single-Step Photonic Method
3. Breakdown designing and Testing Equitable Novel Technology
3. Navigating the Advantages and Disadvantages of Point-of-Care Diagnostics for Health Equity
