    Biography
      Tiziana Lazzarotto is Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, Department of Specialised, Experimental and Diagnostic Medicine, School of Medicine and Surgery at Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna (Italy).
      She is the Head of the Laboratory of Virology at the Operative Unit of Clinical Microbiology at St. Orsola Malpighi University Hospital, Bologna.
      She is the Director of the Post-graduate school in Microbiology and Virology at Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna (Italy).

      Since her thesis she has published more than 158 scientific papers on international-selected Current Contents (total I.F. 568,43; average I.F. 3,62; h-index-Scopus 36, July 2018).
      In particular, she has made significant contributions in the study on the pre and postnatal diagnosis of congenital CMV infection and study of the management of CMV and EBV infections in solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.
      She is member of the managing committee of the Italian Society for Clinical Microbiology (AMCLI) and coordinator of the Italian Network of AMCLI "Infectious Diseases in Transplant (GLaIT)". She is member of the Italian multidisciplinary working group of "Infections & Transplantation" of three Italian Scientific Societies: Clinical Microbiologists (AMCLI), Italian Society of Organ Transplantation (SITO) and the Italian Group for Bone Marrow Transplantation (GITMO).
      She is a founding member of the "European Congenital CMV Initiative (ECCI)", the European group founded to devise and implement concrete actions to deal with the problems linked to congenital CMV infection.
      She is coordinator of a multidisciplinary working group "Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics-Gynecology and Neonatology" of six Italian Scientific Societies: Clinical Microbiologists (AMCLI), Gynaecology and Obstetrics (SIGO), Sexually Transmitted Diseases (SIMaST), Infectious and Tropical Diseases (SIMIT), Neonatology (SIN), and Paediatrics (SIP).

    This webinar will provide an overview on some pathogens that can be transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy (prenatal infections) or delivery (perinatal infections). The most prevalent prenatal infections include: cytomegalovirus, parvovirus B19, rubella virus and Toxoplasma gondii; the perinatal infections include Herpes Simplex Virus 1-2. All these pathogens belong to the TORCH complex and can lead to severe fetal/neonatal anomalies or even loss of life.  
     
    This webinar will review the state of congenital TORCH infections, including incidence, importance of early detection, diagnosis, and disease management.
     
    Most infections in the mother are asymptomatic and/or accompanied by aspecific symptoms and/or aspecific laboratory findings, as a result clinical diagnosis is unreliable. Therefore, today, viro-microbiological laboratory techniques represent a decisive approach in the management of TORCH infections in pregnancy.
     
    Learning Objectives:
    • To review the epidemiology and burden of these infectious diseases in pregnancy and newborns
    • To illustrate the setting of the collaborative diagnostic and clinical pathway for the management of infections in pregnant women and newborns
    • To outline the advantages and limitations of the viro-microbiological diagnosis
    • To describe the measures of prevention and therapy of these infections.
