Spatial biology enables researchers to characterize combined molecular information and spatial resolution in context. By using this technique on tissues, researchers can apply multiple different detection modalities and elucidate the spatial relationship among individual cell types & tissue niches. Due to the complexity of different tissue types and the added complication of different preservation methods( ie Fresh frozen (FF), formalin-fixed, or formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) ), initial experimental conditions must be optimized and taken into consideration when studying multiple proteins and RNA targets. These include (1) tissue handling and fixation (2) epitope accessibility (3) potential for autofluorescence (4) mounting needs.
