Abstract

The classification of anaemias on the basis of MCV is beset with issues. Today’s haematology analysers are able to provide a rapid collection of red blood cell analytes that can be used to supplement our traditional categorization of anaemias. From the simple use of the derived MCH to the reticulocyte haemoglobin content, we can, in combination with blood film examination, provide clinicians an appropriate list of possibilities of the cause of anaemia and advise further investigations.

In this webinar Dr. Thomas will discuss three cases that highlight the impact of red blood cell analytes on the investigations and management of anaemias.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the traditional classifications of anaemia and their salient causes
  • Discuss additional analytes that can help narrow down the possibilities
  • Analyze what other red blood cell or reticulocyte analytes have an evidence base for use
  • Review ways in which these tests can be used more easily in routine clinical practice
