CD55, also known as decay accelerating factor (DAF), is a 60-70 kDa glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchoring protein. CD55 is a member of the protein family, which can protect host tissues from damage by its own complement. CD55 was first thought to be a species-limiting factor that functions at the level of C3 activation. It binds C3b and C4b to inhibit the formation and half-life of C3 convertase. CD55 expression increases after T cell activation. In the presence of, antibodies against CD55 (such as monoclonal antibody D17) have mitogenic effects. CD55 is widely distributed in cells in contact with serum, including hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells. Although CD55 has no important role in controlling hemolysis of red blood cells, it plays an important role in regulating the deposition of C3 on nucleated cells.
