CD9 is a member of the tetrapeptide or transmembrane 4 superfamily (TM4SF; CD37, CD53, CD63, CD81, CD82, etc.). It has a wide range of tissue distribution, and may play a variety of roles in the immune response, tumorigenesis and other cellular processes, but its function has not been fully elucidated. Tetrapeptides CD9, CD63, and CD81 has been reported to be highly enriched on an extracellular vesicle called an exosome. CD9 is regarded as one of the representatives of exosome surface proteins.
