Early exosome release studies have shown that ceramide is a regulator of exosome secretion. Ceramide is an important intracellular second messenger and a key metabolite in sphingolipid biosynthesis pathway, which is formed by N-acylation of sphingolipids. Members of the LASS family (LASS1, LASS2, LASS3, LASS4, LASS5 and LASS6) have been identified as involved in de novo synthesis of ceramides. The location of ceramides with different acyl chains is important for cellular function and may contribute to metabolic tissue function.
